How to keep your NY resolutions on track

The problem with New Year’s resolutions is they are created and stored in our frontal cortex. This part of the brain deals with many day-to-day tasks and even though, when the resolution is new it sits high up the frontal lobes to do list, it doesn’t take long for it to fall down. Work/life commitments, habits slowly overwhelm its importance and little by little your resolution slips to mere a hope or a wish.
So, how do we keep the resolution high up the list? Make your resolution an intention or in Sanskrit a Sankalpa. Turn it into a short mantra, use it in your meditation, stop and repeat your Sankalpa several times a day. Say your mantra silently in your mind 21 times a day. This can be split into several sessions but say each line of your mantra with full, positive intention and awareness. This practice will take your resolution from your frontal lobe deep into your subconscious. Our subconscious defines us, drives us from deep within. Your resolution will become you, there is little effort to maintain your desires from that deep within.
Keep it short, don’t be too ambitious, stopping smoking, drinking less, cutting sugar and being kind to strangers might be a bit much in one go. Chose the biggest resolution, work on that for 45 days then move onto the next resolution.
