cooling breath
When the sun is shining and the heat is rising it’s lovely at the beach or around the pool but sometimes we get caught out of the AC and feel our blood beginning to boil. It can be too much for many of us taking our blood pressure high and leaves us feeling uncomfortable, hot & bothered and maybe a little short tempered…
This breathing technique can help cool the body as well as the mind. Simply drawing air across the tongue to create our own AC, cooling our blood and changing the pace of our breath which will calm the central nervous system.
To practice:
Slightly nod your head forwards.
Either:
1a. Curl your tongue lengthwise to make a straw with your tongue, push it out of the mouth slightly.
1b. If it’s not possible to curl your tongue then simply open the gap between your upper and lower teeth to about 3-4mm, place your tongue behind your teeth.
2. Inhale cool air slowly through the tube formed by your tongue (a) or through the space between your teeth (b). As you inhale gently lift your face towards the ceiling, lengthening the front of your neck (not taking your head back) and at the end of the inhale close your lips and place your cool tongue on the roof of your mouth.
3. Exhale slowly through the nose as you gently lower your head to a neutral position. Repeat for about 10 breaths or more.
This breathing technique: improves focus, reduces agitation / anger / anxiety, and cools the body and mind. When I practise this I feel my skin cooling.
